Never take the elevator
Don't do it. I learned this the hard way.
Rule 80 states: "Never take the elevator". There is a reason for this. Actually there are many reasons for this.
When you take the elevator you are predictable. You can be tracked easily. You are trapped in a box. The elevator always drops you on a semi-fixed location, one that is easy to monitor and observe. Worse, a trap can easely be set on any of the elevators stops.
Once I made that mistake. I was tired, I was angry, but ultimately I was careless. It was my fault.
Instead, use the stairs.
Always take time to recon your surroundings. If you are staying in a hotel, head to the stairs and learn the different routes to the street and to your room. Do this before going to you room. You never know what's waiting. The same applies to any other location. Take time to learn the area. Have a mental map of what's around you and the best way to exit.
Always have an escape plan.
